It is amazing how many bottles we see of CLR when walking into homes. In fairness, this part of the state (yes, that includes Lake Michigan water) is sitting on water that is either hard or very hard. Realistically, that’s just splitting hairs to call them any different. That distinction is merely a matter of how long it’ll take to build up scale on a fixture or how much extra energy your hot water heater needs.
Before buying that next bottle of CLR, you might want to take a shot with this simple DIY recipe. In a standard spray bottle, mix the following:
1/4 cup vinegarExcuse one shameless plug here…you wouldn’t be needing this recipe if you had a non-electric, twin-tank Kinetico. Your water would have been 100% soft, 100% of the time. But this isn’t a bad way to clean up the mess left over from that old salt-hogging dinosaur that the previous homeowner put in the house.
1 T borax
1 squirt dish soap
Fill with water
