Why “still hard” matters: water is classified as hard above 7 grains per gallon. At ~7.5–9+ gpg, Lake Michigan water is far softer than Waukesha’s old well water — but it’s still over the line that causes scale, spotting and dull laundry. Why does Waukesha’s water now have chlorine and chloramine?

To keep the water safe on its long trip from Milwaukee, it’s disinfected with chlorine and chloramine — good for safety. But chlorine and chloramine don’t just disappear at your tap. At these higher levels they have effects the old well water’s lighter chlorination never did.

On the old well water, chlorine was light, so this was rarely a concern in Waukesha. On today’s chlorinated and chloraminated lake water, it is.
