At ~7.5–9+ gpg, Lake Michigan water still leaves scale and spots — a softener just has far less work to do, which means far less salt. We’ll tell you when you don’t need something. Here’s why a properly-tuned softener still earns its keep.
Above 7 gpg, calcium and magnesium still build up in your water heater, fixtures and coffee maker — just more slowly than before.

To keep the water safe on its long trip from Milwaukee, it’s disinfected with chlorine and chloramine — good for safety. But chlorine and chloramine don’t just disappear at your tap. At these higher levels they have effects the old well water’s lighter chlorination never did.

On the old well water, chlorine was light, so this was rarely a concern in Waukesha. On today’s chlorinated and chloraminated lake water, it is.
