Water Systems in the United States

Americans draw about 420 billion gallons per day from ground and surface water supplies, but most is for agricultural and industrial use. About 34 billion gallons per day (168 gallons per person) are treated and delivered for public use. Approximately 80 percent of this public water is supplied by municipal water utilities; 20 percent comes from private wells.

There are close to 200,000 public water systems that are subject to federal and state drinking water regulations in the United States. A public water system is defined as one that serves at least 25 people for 60 or more days each year. These systems are classified into two categories, depending on whether they primarily serve residents or intermittent users.

Community Water Systems have at least 15 service connections (or serve a population of at least 25) and are used by year-round residents. They include municipal and private water utilities for areas such as trailer parks and subdivisions. There are approximately 60,000 community water systems in the United States.

Non-Community Water Systems have at least 15 service connections (or serve a population of at least 25) and are used intermittently. They serve transient sites such as campgrounds, rest areas and gas stations, and non-transient sites such as office buildings, schools and hospitals that have their own water supplies. There are around 140,000 non-community water systems in the United States.

How Kinetico Serves Community Water Systems

Kinetico, through its Community Water Systems Division, manufactures state of the art filtration systems that provide clean, usable water to thousands of citizens. Kinetico's packaged, pressure filtration systems range in size from those that produce 10 gallons per minute to those that can provide up to several million gallons each day.

Most Kinetico systems utilize Macrolite®, a ceramic filtration media jointly developed for water filtration by Kinetico and 3M. First employed to remove oxidized iron in residential water treatment applications, Macrolite was quickly incorporated into larger community water systems to help communities comply with the Surface Water Treatment Rule which mandates filtration of surface water supplies. Most applications require no chemical pretreatment and are served entirely by this unique technology.
