FAQ Myths & Misinformation Waukesha Soft Water

Misinformation: Waukesha Soft Water states "These so-called amazing low salt units have to regenerate multiple times for every one time other units regenerate and do not use 90% less salt. Ask exactly how much salt per month you should expect to use (average is 20 pounds per person)."

The Truth: Yes, our systems do regenerate more often AND they still use far less salt (although we never said 90% less). The true measure of any softener's efficiency is its GPP rating, or, Grains per Pound.

What this is referring to is the actual amount of dissolved rock (measured in grains per gallon) that a softener can remove from your water, and just like MPG ratings, the higher the number the better. A typical single-tank, electric softener may have a capacity to remove 28,000 grains or more and can require as much as 12 pounds of salt to regenerate. Therefore, if you divide the 28,000 grain capacity by 12 pounds of salt the result is 2,333 grains of hardness (rock) removed for every pound of salt used in the regeneration process. In other words it has a GPP rating of 2,333. By comparison, our city water unit, the 2040, uses just one pound of salt to remove 5,222 grains of hardness which is more than double the other unit's capacity resulting in a GPP rating of 5,222. Even if the single tank unit were to only use 8 pounds of salt per regeneration that is still a GPP rating of 3,500 which is well below the Kinetico twin-tank powerhouse! Will a Kinetico softener regenerate more often? Yes it will! But again let's look at facts, not opinions or hearsay:

  • Waukesha city water is typically at a hardness level in the 18 - 22 grains per gallon range.
  • The average person will use about 75 gallons water per day, family of four = 300 gallons/day.
  • 300 gallons of water with 20 grains in each gallon equals 6,000 grains/day
  • 6,000 grains/day x 30 days = 180,000 grains each month (in this example)
  • With a GPP rating of 5,222 a Kinetico 2040 will need to regenerate 34.4 times (180,000 grains/5,222 grain capacity = 34.4)
  • Our competitors unit will regenerate 6.4 times in the same period, 30 days (180,000 grains/28,000 = 6.4)

So, who REALLY uses more salt? Let's see...

  • 34.4 (regenerations) x 1 pound of salt each time = 34.4 pounds of salt in a month - total
  • 6.4 (regenerations) x 8 pounds of salt each time = 51.4 pounds of salt every month

That's an extra 17 pounds every month, or an extra 1,020 pounds over the next 5 years - that's a lot of extra salt!

Keep in mind that they say the average is 20 pounds per person, which would equal a whopping 80 pounds per month (for a family of four), or an EXTRA 36 pounds EVERY MONTH over the Kinetico or 2,160 EXTRA pounds in 5 years! How this equates to LESS salt used is a mystery to us! If you want high-efficiency with less salt and water used, there's only one choice - Kinetico. And that's really what the Dr. says!
