The iron in well water comes in two basic forms: ferrous and ferric. Iron is measured in Parts per Million (PPM) and, surprisingly, it takes as little as .3 PPM to cause staining (that’s 3 tenths of one part per million!). A softener can handle a moderate amount of Ferrous iron but Ferric iron will pass straight through, thus requiring a dedicated system to address it.
